I watched the surveillance video for the hundredth time, bile rising in my throat, my team around me. Dallas grabbed my shoulder, probably to keep me in my seat.

“Get out,” I ordered. I just couldn’t function now as the fearless leader. Before I had retreated to the third floor, I had told Cindy what she wanted to hear, that we would find Beth, that everything would be okay, but deep in my heart, I didn’t know if that was true.

“No,” Dallas said, taking his hand off my shoulder and stepping back to stand with the others, who were all watching me somberly.

No one was listening to me. I pressed play and watched the shadowy figure move around to the side of the porch and watched the small black and white monitors as its dark form scaled the gutter, hand over hand, its wiry body scampering up like a monkey.

Fast forwarding several minutes, I then watched the creature appear again, this time grasping over its shoulder a screaming and flaying three-year-old.

The camera picked up her face, screwed up in fear and terror. I paused the video, the remote feeling like a brick in my hand.

“You can clearly see the magic pouring off of her in this shot,” Garret said, pointing out the white cloud surrounding her.

“She is just a baby,” I said with a choked sob, the emotion finally overcoming me.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up at Dallas, who had rejoined my side. “Don’t worry, Oren. We will get her back. You would do the same for me if it was my little girl.”

Nodding, I watched the rest of the video, forwarding the VHS tape in bits of time. I watched Cindy appear on the screen and try to grab Beth out of the creature’s arms. The demon could have easily possessed her at that moment, but instead it attacked her, its fangs gleaming like a pit bull. It snapped at her, catching her arm and sending her flying back toward the house. Then, it took off so fast; the camera struggled to keep track of it. I shuttered, and the demon only appeared visibly every few frames, before disappearing completely into the night out of the camera’s range.

“The doctor is here for Cindy,” Royce said, coming up the stairs. “That young black one, Dr. Thomas. Don’t know how I feel about him doctoring our folk.”

“Royce, please. Could you leave that at home? I don’t care if the good doctor is black, white, red or brown. He came to our rural community to practice medicine, not fight the civil war again. He’s patching up Cindy, and that’s all that’s important.”

Royce said nothing. I knew he was from the deep south and I wasn’t going to sway him at all. I wanted him gone, but first, I needed to rescue my daughter.

“What’s the plan, boss?” Dallas said, pulling up a chair and spreading out a map of the area.

“We’re going in, obviously,” I said my voice turning to steel.
